Skalpel - Konfusion

Got some slightly jazzy tracks for your ears today.  It’s interesting to hear how electronic and jazz music have intersected over the years.  One of the labels to really do some special stuff with jazz is Ninja Tune, which I have been a fan of for years.  Their catalog is deep, spanning the globe and filled with some really choice cuts.  One of these choice cuts is Polish duo , whose music is deep and immersive, and who feature some of the most beautiful, consistent album artwork I’ve ever seen.

Another classic Ninja Tune group I used to be huge into was , an ensemble from Norway.  I haven’t heard anything new from them in a while, but I will always love their 2002 release A Livingroom Hush.  This track is called Lithuania, and it reminds me very much of a train ride or being in an airport, a song about being in-transit, perhaps capturing that giddy feeling when you first arrive.  Let’s hope we hear more from them soon!

Enough about the past, however, especially when you have examples of artists molding jazz into newer genres, such as dubstep.  Dubstep seems to really be catching on in America, and I think we’re on the cusp of a wave of new sounds and influences being woven into it.  While this track is a little less jazzy than some of the others on ‘s newest outing Great Lengths, he is bringing some freshness to listeners everywhere with a unique blend of dubstep, techno and jazz flavors.  I wouldn’t be surprised if this album dominates peoples’ top list at the end of this year.

is an artist I heard back in college, we used to dance around our dorm to the track Six Foolish Fishermen, which remains one of my all time favorite happy tracks, it could take me on the worst day and leave me dancing around my apartment like a happy little gnome.  His latest release Amateur Dramatics takes a very bold approach to driving forward various genres of electronic music, most notably IDM.  The quality of composition at some points make me think this music was written to score some kind of wild, animated Pixar film.  This track has a bit of jazz and a techno kick woven in, another fun track that captures the sensation of being in-transit or movement.
