CHARLIE!, Lusine, Trus’me, Wolf + Lamb
Back from an awesome weekend in Brooklyn once again, but this time unfortunately I was without a camera– my Sony DSC has finally bit the dust I fear, and my Holga is still in Baltimore. I had nothing but my cell phone camera, which has been known to fetch some , but not in this kind of darkness. Some great music permeated this mostly rainy (still!!) weekend, all happening for this year’s Northside festival.
CHARLIE! is my friend of many years, he played a set on Friday which included this remix of the Louis Laroche track Distant Lovers. The remix was originally created for a contest, which it ended up not winning, much to my protest as I think this remix is far superior. It’s got a funky synthy pop thread that makes it a real guilty pleasure, grab it here for free.
Lusine was in town to DJ the later portion of Ghostly‘s 10 year Anniversary Showcase at Studio B, the Brooklyn stop of a worldwide celebration of a decade of solid forward-thinking eclectic electronic music. Lusine’s set was markedly more saturated and sociable, more akin to deep house than the wide range of organic-yet-minimal sounds which I’ve come to know and love. Of course, that’s not to say I haven’t been enjoying his newest sounds, including this newly-released single Two Dots, out TODAY! Pick it up, it’s got a great Pezzner remix I heard on the Freerange podcast a couple months ago.
Being such a huge fan of Trus’me, I was really excited to see him spin this past Saturday at a show that was half circus act, half dance party. I got a chance to shake his hand and tell him how much I loved both his 2007 release Working Nights, as well as what he was doing with his label . As a cover designer, I was especially pleased to hear that Prime Numbers releases will be designed to feature a consistent design style that is cohesive not only with the Prime Numbers brand, but also across releases. I don’t collect vinyl because I don’t own turntables or a record player, but I might just have to start. FOR THOSE OF YOU IN PHILLY…he’s playing sunday at the Piazza at Schmidt’s.
Wolf + Lamb has been making a LOT of big moves this year, with their release of Seth Troxler‘s awesome Aphrika EP that got my attention, and then the release of this burner, Brooklynn EP. Wolf + Lamb headlined the night, but unfortunately I had to duck out at around 3:30, so I fear I may have missed the bulk of their set. Either way, I know I’ll be hearing a lot more from this very progressive hybrid offering that is a production duo, a record label and a live act, all in one. Also worth mentioning is No Regular Play, another of Wolf + Lamb’s new acts. They were playing while I arrived, a very catchy opening set for a wonderful evening, and I haven’t even mentioned the wild circus performance that made this unique party one to remember, and one to hope happens again.
