Body Language, Seth Troxler & Shaun Reeves, Owusu & Hannibal, Nicolay
Sorry for the lack of activity this past week, it hasn’t been without good reason– lots going on! The album cover for Mogi Grumbles‘ upcoming LP was in full-swing this past week, among a few other projects on the table at the moment. At any rate, the Body Language EP I’ve been going on about all this time finally came out this weekend and things have been going very well for Grant, Matt, Ang, and their new drummer, Ian! This track has a beautifully-executed soul o’er 4/4 structure, complemented by a solid vocal duet. Lots of familiar, inviting tones can be found throughout the Speaks EP. Also, here’s a from a show earlier this week, they’re playing tonight at the Bowery Ballroom with Passion Pit, so if you’re in NYC that will be the spot! Check out those sick visuals!
Here’s a sick cut thrown my way by Ryan at Lucid Transport, a hot remix of Cesar Mervieille‘s track Crapette by Seth Troxler & Shaun Reeves. Seth has really been doing well for himself recently, hosting a last month, and just living a life that causes waves and ripples of fanfare. I love the slightly uptempo vibe for what can easily be slowed down for late nights, and the overarching sample, which is from Notorious B.I.G.’s track Everyday Struggle. Hotness.
Now here’s one many of you may have missed back in 2006, I was talking to David Edwards of Minotaur Shock / Principal Participant, and mentioned one of his Principal tracks reminds me of a track by Owusu & Hannibal called Elephants. Turns out he too knew about this record, Living With Owusu & Hannibal, and we got to revisiting what I nearly overlooked– an underappreciated album I think would still sound very fresh mixed in there late night. Do yourself a favor and peep this album if you haven’t heard it before!
Nicolay is one half of the Foreign Exchange, part of what I’m defining as an electric soul groove movement, kind of advancing a lot of R&B and hip-hop to have a soulful groove, without sounding dated, or even vintage. Rather, it sounds pretter forward thinking to me, in the case of this hip-hop track, it’s got a slower, more R&B groove, but it doesn’t sound much like commercial MTV-made hip-hop. It could be played with 4hero or Dilla, Little Brother (obviously) or maybe even some deep slow house sort of set.
