Nebraska, The Runners, Manuel Tur, Jetone
Some chillin house selections for your day, three of which are fresh off the grill, one is a dubby throwback. First up, British producer Nebraska, whose recent re-issue of the Terrestrial Variations EP just came out on Dutch house imprint Rush Hour. The reissue came onto my radar, as with so many other tunes, via Jakub’s recommendation on ISO50. Gotta love the muted jazz sensibility that permeates the track, making it a great summer cookout dazer, oh and I mention this track is actually 10 years old?!? Whoa…almost as mind-boggling as the image I chose for today’s post, these crayon sculptures are beyond amazing, I wish I knew who made them, but I just stumbled across this image on FFFFOUND! or Dropular or one of them.
Up next is a tune I found on Beatport’s Deep House page, I was drawn to the auspiciously titled Woman Pleaser EP because of its name, but found within the release a set of dubby deep house tracks that beckon the booty with sultry synth stabs and a soulful female croon. The Runners sound to me like one of those little-known production outfits that gets spun at a party and is always accompanied by people asking “oh who’s this?” while peeking furtively at the album’s title spinning around on the turntables.
‘s newest release 0201, out on Freerange, has been recieving a veritable avalanche of positive regard since its release this past month. While I think the entire album is highly enjoyable, with a startling range of BPMs from slower disco-tinged deep house, to your more expected dance floor tunes that roll along at higher tempos. I couldn’t resist posting up this track, yet another found on Jimpster’s Freerange Podcast lineup from two weeks ago (I posted that San Soda track earlier, also from this podcast), a real standout of a track with a catchy and rarely-heard beat structure, I would love to play this track to either start or finish off a DJ set, it has this epic sense to it that just seems to set the right tone.
Last up is a throwback from , a glitchy sample-inflused 4/4 alter-ego for ambient dynamo . This track is from his 2001 release Utramarin, and it still manages to stay pertinent, I feel like I could throw down some of these tunes, especially more structured dubby ones like this, in a set with Cadenza tunes or something from Lawrence. This album helped keep me on solid ground all last week while I was sick, some of them sound more like Hecker’s signature blankets of ambient and static, but this one quite unequivocally tells listeners to get on the floor and dance.
