Palm Skin Productions, VonStroke, MC Cullah, Daniel
Gonna really mix things up with today’s post, and we’ve got a couple freebies to enjoy! I have been bumping these releases while working on a bunch of projects, hopefully these tunes will add a little variety and spice to your workday!
First up is , with a sick track called Big Bear off an eponymous EP on Primaudial Recordings. Yet another track I heard on the wonderful Freerange Podcast, I have found out about so many amazing deep house cuts because of Matt Masters, and now Jimpster, releasing their bi-monthly saga of sick tracks. Even if Freerange isn’t your cup of tea (making you insane in my book), some of the new releases they spin on the podcast are really top notch. I am in love with the kicks in this song, the chime samples, the stringy synth stabs, and what almost sounds like a Marvin sample (I hear Got To Give It Up, can anyone confirm?). The entire EP is really solid as gold though, I can see this landing on my best of 2009 list, I need to check out more from Primaudial!
Up next, yet another great release thrown onto my radar by my buddy Ryan at Lucid Transport, is one of those big name DJ’s who’s unique power seems to be his ability to appeal to both sides of the house/techno coin. His tracks, while markedly more sociable and dance floor-oriented, could also please a more underground-focused crowd. Well, it goes without saying that the Moodgadget crew is a fan of his, Jakub has mentioned he is a big fan, so I was especially pleased to hear what he did with this Isomer Transition beat, off the Moodgadget release 1971. This track appears on Claude Von Stroke’s Fabric 46 mix, which is part of the very well-known Fabriclive series. Von Stroke’s Mix is really awesome, as this track evidences, it almost dares you not to wanna shake your ass wildly.
My buddy Minkis, who turned me onto Bogdan Irkük, sent me a link to MC Cullah‘s sick, free new album, E=MC Cullah, this morning, and I was actually very surprised at the quality of the beats and rhymes. Like , this guy seems to be getting a good bit of positive regard for his release, sharing it with the masses for free, with no strings attached. This track is a slow-rolling trip hoppy tune, complimented by some of the most laid back vocals I’ve heard in a while. The release itself is incredibly versatile, some beats use a breasky hip hop structure, others use a dancey 4/4 structure, while others kind of drift around like this one. Very cool, MC Cullah should find a nice label to put out his music soon, and he will likely have a nice little fan base following him from this free release.
Finally, we have a free track off Moodgadget‘s upcoming release of Daniel‘s new LP Lazrus. You may have heard about his free release of a pop-song triple play called Bulbz. Well, July 21st, you can hear what Daniel is really all about. Fans of Thom Yorke, Jamie Lidell, TV on the Radio, and I’d say even Remy Shand, will really dig this album– there is a romantic, even lustful at times, motif that spans the LP. Many of these tracks are love songs with an indie/electronic spin, akin to Thom Yorke’s passionate croons in the track Harrowdown Hill. This album will grow on you, make sure you check out the tracks Sugar Fish and Lex Luthr when it comes out, they, along with this free tune, are my favorites of the album.
