Kompakt Total 10

Got some awesome deep house picks for you today, including two that can be considered vocal house (sort of) that don’t sound like crap!  I’m excited to share these with you because they’ve been getting a lot of play on my speakers recently.

Kompakt just released the tenth installment of their Total series, a sort of annual glimpse into a label that has solidified into the backbone of the music coming out of Cologne over the last decade.  It opens with an ace serve from oddball label forerunner , who does an incredible job in this track of phasing in a completely irrelevant and somewhat silly theme of tennis into a solid dance track.  I absolutely love the intro sequence of this track.

Andre Lodemann – Searchin’

I am surprised that I must have initally passed this track over, but when I heard it on Nitzan‘s (of Fine Art Recordings) See Saw Mixtape over on Percussion Lab earlier in the week (probably while I was listening to his mix while typing up that post), I instantly knew not to miss the boat.  At any rate, the vocals in this track are spell binding (oh yeah, I just went there…spell binding), and the bassline just does so much to give this track some personality.  This track screams, “late night, late summer!”

Hideo Kobayashi – Listen To The Voice

Here’s a track that really struck me when I first heard it– it’s by , and it’s most definitely a vocal house track, it’s meant to be played in sociable, upbeat settings.  The single has a score of remixes and dubs, with both vocal and instrumental tracks.  While there’s a case to be made for both versions, the instrumental is definitely more appropriate on some remixes, I had to go with the original mix as my favorite pick.  The vocals here are great in some places, especially when they work with that amazing kick drum…this track is a great example of the proper use of the kick to provide a good strong foundation in a track.

Finally, we’ll finish off with a really cool sub-heavy roller from .  I’ve mentioned Cadenza‘s undeniable presence before, they seem to exist on another level, a higher plane of existence.  This track gives us a taste of that, with an airy and light track that bumps along like it’s skipping over clouds like a rock on water.  The entire album, Seventynine, is immersive and full of character, definitely a recommended listen!
