Autumn is setting in, which brings with it a cold, crisp, fragrant wind, and a humble and familiar change in the tones of nature that touch our very souls and affect its temperament. It leaves me in an ambivalent state, I already miss the warmth of summer, but I look forward to the sobering silence of winter. These new releases for fall provide an excellent soundtrack to ease my mind and body into the new temperatures and emotions of the twilight of 2010.

‘s newest release, Lasted, is out now on Kranky, and it took hold of me instantly upon first listen. Having heard a couple of these songs in acoustic, unmastered, or otherwise leaked forms, I knew that the new album would feature a more cohesive sound, advancing Meluch’s pristine songcraft without losing sight of what makes his music so touching. The result features some of the catchiest, most accessible lyrics, and a more concrete instrumental arrangement, this should more than please longtime fans and open the eyes and ears of new listeners everywhere. Check out this album for sure, definitely sits among 2010’s best. For reference, I’m including some excellent impromptu video jamming he did over the summer, to illustrate the kind of anticipation that surrounded Lasted’s release (see bottom of post).

Deerhunter – Fountain Stairs – Halcyon Digest

Although it’s obvious that is doing well enough in the blog buzz category, their newest album Halcyon Digest is especially appropriate for today’s post, given the upbeat yet somber tone of the album, making it a perfect fall release. I have never really been a die-hard Deerhunter fan, at least not in the sense of knowing their albums like the back of my hand, but exactly as it has been to-date, they write some songs that I can’t help but loop each time they release an album or EP. Fountain Stairs is one of the few tracks to feature the vocals of Deerhunter’s stage-shy guitarist Lockett Pundt, cool to hear him lay down the track.

Foxes in Fiction – Bathurst – beko CS02

Warren Hildebrand aka Foxes in Fiction and I have been talking a lot recently about all of the excellent things he has been up to, between interviews, the release of the new “Branches” tee we collaborated on at the Moodgadget Store, his upcoming shows at CMJ music festival, including one tonight at Glasslands in Brooklyn, the incredible haven he is creating for textured lo-fi indie rock and ambient in Orchid Tapes, and his inclusion on the excellent free digital single label Beko‘s recent compilation which features this slice of poppy nostalgia. The future looks incredibly bright for young Warren, and we all as listeners stand to benefit.

Trans-Bedroom Sound – Soaked Sleeve – Descending Dusk EP

Speaking of Orchid Tapes, coming soon is a bite-size, always FREE digital (with limited-run handmade cassettes for sale) EP from Trans-Bedroom Sound, who might be one of the youngest ambient projects I’ve ever heard of. This teenager likely covers more ground in translating influences and emotions into these soothing and sociable soundscapes than anything the majority of us would have been capable at that age when we (in the US, at least) only had a driver’s permit and not a license. The rest of the EP, which is worth the free download if you dig this track, has some very ethereal drones, my only complaint then, is that it leaves me craving more…much more, we need a cohesive full-length, but let’s remind ourselves not to rush such nascent songwriting talent like it’s the springtime already. Time to appreciate the fall for everything it brings.
