Beautiful Bells, Gold Panda, Star Slinger, 骨架的
Now that I have a few moments to catch my breath and give some love to the ole Blog n’ Chain, I’ve gathered a ton of tracks to share with you this week. I’m starting things off with some beats that cover a wide range of emotions and contexts, and for your sake and mine, I’ll try to keep the writing to a minimum.
Shigeto – Children At Midnight (Beautiful Bells Grade School Remix) – Full Circle Remixes

Ghostly recently released a couple of highly worthwhile remix EPs, including one for Shigeto’s debut LP Full Circle, which features an excellent lineup of remixers, including Mike Slott, Take, and even Moodgadget fam Mogi Grumbles and Sun Hammer (darker, noisier alter ego of A Setting Sun). The remix that really surprised me, however, is this one for the Children at Midnight by Beautiful Bells, one of Moodgadget’s newer additions. Every time you think you have the music of Justin Peake figured out, he flips the script on you with a remix that sounds more cohesive, yet still as adventurous as ever.
Gold Panda – Marriage (Star Slinger Remix) – Marriage

The other remix EP from Ghostly’s lineup of abstract beat artists, , features remixes from Baths (as warm and catchy as you might expect), Forest Swords, and Halls, but the one that almost knocked me out of my seat comes from UK-based , who has been bombarding the tubes with some unbelievably killer material, sometimes free of charge. The original mix of the EP’s title track, Marriage, was one of my favorites from the album Lucky Shiner, so it’s great to see the floor being opened up to the right cats for the right stems. The fun doesn’t stop with GP either, a summation of his pre-Shiner material will be released later this month in the form of Companion. Check it.
Star Slinger – Hot Potato – Rogue Cho Pa

Since he deserves even more play, I’m also including this deep, dope banger from a (previously?) free EP he released in February called . I have no clue who it is he sampled in this tune, but damned if I don’t feel like a G when it comes on. If you know me, you know that it’s the deepest parts of the composition that have me hooked on it, but Star Slinger’s playful use of vocal samples throughout, combined with his incorporation of a younger, less-refined sense of hip-hop narcissism we remember from our youth. Yeah, you know, when MTV wasn’t peddling filth (Beavis and Butthead and the Grind were not filth, shit like Skins is…) and encouraging teenage pregnancy and the spread of STDs.
骨架的 – Tones – Holograms

OK, well now that I’ve gone off the deep end musically and philosophically, I’d like to share some especially mysterious shit you might not have discovered otherwise. That is unless, of course, you follow the incredibly-selected electro-nostalgia-delic world of Astro Nautico. It’s a shame they don’t have more cohesive art direction to match the musical splendor they have on display, even still, their blog will make you bug out with extended exposure. I have no idea who 骨架的 is, or where he found what sounds like funky laid-back interlude-style instrumentals for a public-access porn channel…but I like em. Check Astro Nautico for a download link.
