To cap off this week’s barrage of music, I have a selection of dirty deep disco house tracks for you to celebrate the arrival of Friday to. I’m sorry I don’t get as much time these days to blog, but rest assured that I will keep things alive around here whenever I get a chance. Zepp001 is a well-hidden, rather mysterious producer from Seattle, who somehow found his way into Delusions of Grandeur‘s catalogue with a pair of more-than-appropriate EPs for the label’s impeccably-curated collection of deep disco. It’s a good thing that he doesn’t seem all that interested in people knowing his name, focusing instead on making tracks that get charted by guys like Jimpster and the like. Both EPs are more than worthy of a listen (or purchase if you’re feeling generous) if you like what Delusions of Grandeur is bringing to the table, or more appropriately, to the floor.

I hadn’t consciously checked out Philpot Records until recently, and of course, when I did, I discovered that I had been missing out these last couple years on some seriously dank shit from . I knew about Soulphiction before then, but I really didn’t know what was up with him until I found a couple EPs of his on Philpot. I absolutely love the familiarity of the bongos in this track, and the warm, disarming, blanket-like character in the backing pads. I am also very, very happy that he saw fit to give us just a tiny taste of vocals and not ruin the track by pushing it into every crack it could fit into, hoping it would give the track more pop-appeal. It’s still a bit cliche when the vocals pop up, but they help distinguish the track with their moderate use, instead of taking over the vibes altogether.

Soulphiction – The Limelight (Trus’me Remix) – (single)

Expanding on the message I’m delivering to you, that Philpot and Soulphiction are dope and worth playing, is a remix that flew completely under my radar in 2009. I’m glad that this still sounds as relevant as ever in the deep disco sound, and comes off surprisingly, uncharacteristically diverse on the part of Trus’me, who has impressed listeners more for his disco sensibilities than the sort of deep house vibes on display in this remix. I love the funky wah effect applied to those guitars, backed by a shimmering synth stab that oozes loungey elegance and sensual sophistication that makes you want to read a book about philosophy whilst “on the job,” if you catch my drift.

Another label I recently discovered, and now have a great appreciation for, is , a label that makes a primary mission out of recapturing those straight, unadulterated classic house grooves. Warm, funky, nostalgic, filled with style and a playful sense of character, they curate their releases well, giving the floor to producers who know how to bring out the best in those classic house vibes, referencing disco in a way most producers have forgotten how to, in a subtle way that makes you wonder if this was released in 2011 or 1979, or 1991, for that matter. Fortunately, was actually present during the late 80’s and early 90’s on these scenes, and has found a way to present those experiences in a way those of us who were in diapers at the time can fully appreciate.
