VA - ModeTwo

Album cover #8 for me makes it’s appearance today, it’s Moodgadget‘s Detroit techno-steeped mini-compilation Modetwo, out on Necodo and iTunes, to name a few.  This track has gotten a lot of great feedback from listeners, it’s a Librarian track mixed by Teef of Cincinatti-based Race Car Productions.  The lyrics are damp and haunting, floating over a beat that is both catchy and filled with personality.  I’m lovin’ Race Car’s album covers too!

I really wish I’d had the money to go see The Foreign Exchange last night here in Philly.  Phonte, one-third of hip-hop mainstay , has teamed up with North Carolina soul/jazz musician Nicolay to create some of the best electric soul I’ve heard since ‘s .  This track was iTunes’ free Single of The Week a while back, and it’s one of my favorites from their 2008 album Leave It All Behind.  My #1 favorite remains All Or Nothing/Coming Home To You, featuring none other than .  I made a very nice impromptu freestyle beat from the track’s instrumental yesterday, but lost it by the end of the session in all the excitement.

Finally, ‘s new ambient epic, An Imaginary Country was released yesterday from our friends at Kranky.  Fans of Mr. Hecker have lauded the new album with praise, citing its powerful and seamless listening experience from start to finish.  I myself, while a fan of Tim Hecker in general, am much more partial to his softer tracks.  I am not really into more abbrasive ambient or noisepop, but even still, I can dig some of his more intense compositions, like Spring Heeled Jack Flies Tonight off 2006’s Harmony in Ultraviolet.  This track is my initial favorite from the album, despite it’s being the shortest, it sounds like falling into a giant pile of goose-feather pillows.  You can play it on repeat and it will permeate your aural area with a calm you could cut with a butter knife.
