Machine Music Showdown: Kiln vs. Twerk
This is one showdown I can’t decide a winner for, so I’m opening the table up to anyone who might be reading or listening. Post up your thoughts if you have any! I think these artists both compose soundscapes that could be compared in a showdown-type fashion, both have a sound that is most definitely mechanical and mathmatic, but also very organic and saturated at the same time.
Kiln is Kevin Hayes on pulse/pump and tick with Kirk Marrison and Clark Rehberg III on hue/shape and spark. They are based in Michigan and are currently signed to Ghostly International. This track Rustdusker plays like a warm orange sunrise reflecting off a glass building. I came across a couple free mp3’s on this blog post on Lost in Your Inbox.
Twerk is Shawn Hatfield. His albums, live performances, and museum installations incorporate a dynamic mixture of microscopic electronic art and algorithmic-based compositional techniques, each showcasing Twerk’s use of his custom designed software. The track is From Brown to Green, a song that, as the title implies, has a green and brown organic layer to it like robotic insects floating around a murky swamp. Also, here’s a music video for the track, which you can find on Twerk’s blog.
I think it’s a real close match between these two picks, and as always, if you enjoy the music, support the artists by buying a track or two!
