Weekend in NYC Day 1: Glasslands & Dub War
Finally getting some time to sit down and reflect on last weekend, which I spent in NYC, a mix of business and pleasure, a photo shoot with Body Language, and a series of serious musical adventures.
Friday, I got into Brooklyn on a tight schedule but fortunately with a little time to spare…the tentative plan was that I’d stick with BL for the night, they had a show with fellow Moodgadget artists D. Gookin and Bluejay, then they were going to party with a bunch of friends. The show was at Glasslands in Williamsburg, and very early, starting at 7:30. It ended around 11 o’clock, with some excellent performances of new material presented to those who came out.
Jakub and Brian (Mux Mool) then broke the news to me that not only would I be able to accompany them to Dub War over in Manhattan, but that I had no choice: I was being kidnapped to have my brain reprogrammed by the deepest, dirtiest sub-blasting music known as dubstep. That, and the ever-elusive dubstep front-runner Burial was rumored to be present at LOVE, the awesome venue of the show where Loefah and Actress, among others, would bombard the floors with some of the darkest, heaviest beats from mostly dubstep, but also garage and even chicago house selections. The bass of this show most defnitely did something to the wiring in my noggin, because like a number of the Moodgadget crew, I am now addicted to dubstep.
I came home and had to find a good mix of this stuff to keep me going…the following selections are from Dubstep Allstars Vol.4, from 2006, as well as an Actress-produced track that he played during his set. Looks like Tempa is like the Freerange of dubstep… Also, although Burial never took over the 1’s and 2’s, I do believe I captured him on film…see if you can play a game of Where’s Burial? (Hint: he’s not wearing a red striped sweater and glasses.) That is, of course, if Jakub’s claim from that night “F&$% it, I’M BURIAL!” was in fact, just a joke.
The above shot was taken at an exceptionally good angle, you see, because the floor was absolutely packed, the entire club was like a cavernous cave, complete with molded surfaces, packed wherever possible with gargantuan speakers which churned out the loudest bass tones I’ve ever heard…they shake your bones and can even make you nauscious in some cases. Also met a DJ by the name of Dr. Stepper, he hosts a dubstep program on DnBTV.com for all the heads out there. I walked out…more like stumbled out in a blast of fire and smoke, at 4:30am, with the strange urge to shop for 50-inch chrome rims, a chain gun, and a bunch of dubstep records, as well as a huge craving for lemonade…I bought what I thought was lemonade, only to find out after taking a sizeable chug that it was actually grapefruit juice. A literally sour ending to a completely sweet night. Tomorrow, I’ll post up Day 2, so check back soon!
