Boards of Canada, Proem, Luomo
Today, I have made great progess with getting at least a passable working template in place. Still got a ways to go but I think we’re getting there, possibly ahead of schedule!
The following tunes in my _idm playlist were the most notable today (I promise I wont make it a habit of posting ambient/idm everyone’s already heard!):
While you may have already heard every song from Boards of Canada a million times, I highly suggest you revisit the track Tears From The Compound Eye. This was one of those tracks I passed over way back when the Campfire Headphase first came out, mistook Tears for a different song I didn’t like, and then never played again. Yet I would still hear the melody for it in my head, I came across it again late last year. The beginning of the song, that combination of base and synth, is like sliding into an oversized leather chair, or (see photo above), the rest of the song drifts along contemplatively, it gives you time to collect your thoughts.
was an artist whose sound really helped define the idm scene when it first began to solidify in the US around the turn of the century. His recordings on Merck were especially significant, I think, making his contribution to Merck’s catalogue one of the reasons everyone memorializes and eulogizes the label whenever they talk about it. I had a conversation with Matt Young (formerly of Landau, now in a group called Body Language) about the way people talk about Merck and how he handles the acronym IDM, as we walked to a liquor store from the Red Lobster in Times Square to get more tequila for their unacceptably bland margaritas. How does this relate to Proem or this track, Ctimsells? Well, it doesn’t, I just think Merck is such a fascinating tale. Bonus points for whoever knows what the hell Ctimsells means. **Note: the mp3 version I have of this track starts 1:23 or so into the track, and the audio player plugin cant play other formats, it comes in right when things really get interesting.
This track is more microhouse than idm, but it has a very catchy beat, I’m diggin the snares. I don’t find myself being drawn to snares often in house music, but somehow found a way. Here’s to musicians with more split personas than Sibyl Dorsett, it’s an easy thing to get into when it comes to electronic music, because (althogether now kids) it’s not a genre, its a means of production.
