[I intended to post this yesterday, but didn’t get around to it, it’s actually sunny today]
Rain for the past week has been incessant…it’s been raining for over a week now, and I had some pretty nasty leaks in the ceiling. Although my apartment is actually very nice, especially from an aesthetic point of view, one of my few complaints would be the water damage present in some areas. Well, they had finally cleared a massive growth of ivy that had been blocking a small drainpipe on our slanted exposed wood roof, allowing gallons and gallons of stagnant rainwater drain. Today’s tunes are dark, yet not evil. Like the looming heavy clouds above, they are simply one aspect of a world of aural stimuli. The rain clouds make it look like dusk at 2pm, but they rain a soothing rhythm, and in these spring tempratures, it’s actually quite pleasant to be outside in a pair of gym shorts, an old tee and flip-flops.
is a duo comprised of early IDM artists and . I heard this track a few years ago, and was entranced by it’s deep, dark atmosphere. It’s from their 2003 release Where We’re From the Birds Sing a Pretty Song. It’s got a futuristic “secret mission” sylish sheen to it.
I’ve posted from before, here’s a very–interesting–remix of another track off Where We’re From… called Rengoku. Being a fan of cyberpunk sci-fi sorts of settings, I was a big fan of the wild, glitchy robotic vocals. Reminds me of Xerxes from System Shock 2 if any of you gaming nerds picked up on that. I think I found a new track to open up a set, I’d love to find a way to work this into a deep/micro house mix.
has a track on Expanse at Low Levels that I’m a big fan of for today’s theme, this one isn’t quite as dark, but the soundscapes provide an uneasy, yet very organic and natural backdrop to compliment his piano. You may have caught KBD on the Ambient Moodcast I did a couple months back, well his newest release, a beautiful collection of guitar drone called Fervency is now out, which I highly recommend to fans of classic ambient musicians like Brian Eno or Steve Roach.
And I had to dig deep to pick a good one to add to this post, a super-rare track that took me years to find. If anyone honestly knows who is without googling it first, comment here so I know someone else in the world has heard this stuff. It’s an alter-ego of , who has an absolutely fascinating ongoing theme accompanying his tracks, involving Soviet espionage around the world, or at least he adds these interesting descriptions to various tracks I’ve come across. I may have said earlier that today’s tracks aren’t evil, but with an album title of Night of the Illuminati, this track, Berg Hotel, feels very ominous and rainy, yet catchy nonetheless.
