Modeselektor - Hello Mom!

A bunch of electronic tunes covering a medium range of scenarios  from the past 8 years today.  I was scanning through my library trying to build up a few playlists and came across each of these tracks.

I originally intended to post a classic old track called Red Hot Car, but the file I own is .m4p, so instead I’ll post one of his newer tracks, off his latest release Just A Souvenir.  However, since the real reason I loved Red Hot Car was the mind-boggling video, I’ve embedded that as well.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen an artist with such an eclectic and rapidly-evolving sound, look at Red Hot Car, which came out in 2001, and then this track, The Coathanger…does it even sound remotely like the same guy?  You can listen to his material between then and now and still find no logical progression of style, but always something that make you ears want to jump off your head and dance around.

Modeselektor is pretty big, especially out in it’s home turf in Germany where Bpitch Control has its own universe where it’s alien inhabitants (aka Zee Germans) that just party and dance…don’t believe me?  The label’s founder is female producer/DJ Ellen Allien, so there.  This track got a good bit of attention from the IDM world, since the rest of the release (and Modeselektor’s music in general) feels a little more dancefloor oriented in my opinion.  I love the synth work throughout, it gives the well-crafted beat a nice support layer while staying varied and fluid enough not to sound repetitive.  And you gotta love the album art– a simple template for a successful album cover design.

Here’s a track from a Remix Album that was featured on iTunes a while back, long before the tragic death of one half of the group, Charles Cooper.  It’s a remix of a track called A Genuine Display, from their album Specifics, a 2002-released Ghostly mainstay.  This Telefon Tel Aviv remix encapsulates a great blend of both styles, sort of a give and take making the remix quite successful, and very relaxing, a Telefon Tel Aviv signature quality.

And since we’re talking about some of the most prominent electronic artistry, I felt it would be appropriate (then again when isn’t it) to post this track from , which accompanied one of the most immersive scenes of one of the poignant films I’ve ever seen– Lost in Translation.  This serene track has a dual quality to it, like a mini orchestral piece with two movements.  Either way, it makes me remember that one time I was lost in Kyoto and I’ve never been to Kyoto.
