Culprit Tech: The mind of Matt Pattinson
I came across this on Sci-fi-o-rama, one of my favorite blogs for visual imagery to stimulate the imagination. Looking back at past depictions of the future is pretty interesting, I took a course in science fiction literature when I was at Pitt, and we looked at this idea in detail. There is a wonderful sub-section of mid-century design that can be attributed to the massive rise in popularity of science fiction. Therefore, being such a fan of mid-century design, I am naturally pretty attracted to this visual style for sci-fi.
The artist, Edinburgh-based Matt Pattinson, who operates his blog Culprit Tech, seems to incorporate both a mid-century sense of design identity, with utilitarian line-based illustrations you might expect to see in a handbook or field manual. It seems to feel very mid-century to me, although these drawings look like they were made recently. What really helps drive these home is the Cousteau-like narration, it makes me think of the voice of Steve Zissou from Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic. The tongue-in-cheek sense that pervades this series of illustrations is as immersive as the sense of the absolutely strange and outlandish which surrounds his characters on these uncharted alien worlds.
Good stuff!
