Dananananaykroyd, Foals, Johnny Foreigner, Damiera
Time for some indie rock that picks up where punk left off many years ago. I hear a lot of influences in these tunes, some of which reminds me of At the Drive-In, Bloc Party, and a few others. This is a pretty drastic tangent from the normally posted fare, but as a listener of all kinds of music, I figured it would be good to throw this in for a change. I think there has to be some kind of psychological or physiological effect stemming from constant exposure to dancefloor-oriented 4/4 tracks, so this will serve as a nice, rawkus change of pace. Each of these songs has frenetic, often high-pitched vocal work, and somewhat techncal, unpredictable guitar progressions.
Alright, I know, I know, these guys have the stupidest band name since , but at the end of the day, it’s about the music, and whether or not it’s enjoyable to listen to. Scottish group have been creating waves with their most recent release Hey Everyone. I’d say in this case, there is a lot of fun to be had listening to this song if you keep an open mind. I can tell this is meant to appeal to a mainstream audience, but for some reason, that’s alright with me, provided these guys don’t turn into absolute toolbags if they catch on.
is another band that has been advancing this poppy indie post punk dance coming out of the UK, carrying the torch lit by Bloc Party. This track is from their self-titled release, and it doesn’t really push any radical boundaries, but damned if it doesn’t make you want to hop around in your seat a little bit. They just recently remixed a track by , who I just blogged earlier this week, it can be found easily on Hype Machine.
Here’s a track from yet another UK based group, the trio known as (or JoFo for short), you get the idea at this point that there is a pretty entertaining movement that infuses elements of some of our favorite sounds growing up, there is definitely an appeal here that speaks to my tastes back in high school. Kind of tough to put my finger on, but either way, this track off their 2007 release is a pretty interesting listen with some real nice guitar work. At this point, either you realize how dime-a-dozen this sound appears to be getting, or that there are some sweet bands out there that are making music you may (or may not) enjoy.
Finally, to give you a slight break from this dancey post punk british invasion, a look at a band I got into a couple years ago from New York called . I find Damiera’s appeal to be one that unfortunately only elicits my attention every so often nowadays. I seem to have abandoned my tastes for guitars in lieu of the synth and the turntabe…even still, whenever I hear aspects of old songs being incorporated into entirely different endeavors (probably inadvertently as well, the one bassline at the chorus that reminds me of DMB’s Ants Marching, for instance), it perks my ears up and gets me listening.
