Got some fun disco-tinged picks today, including picks from a show I caught early Saturday evening this past weekend in NYC. I introduced my friends Ben and Alex, who make music as CHARLIE! and Mogi Grumbles, respectively. A few months ago (feels like just yesterday, where did the summer go?), Ben asked me if I knew anyone who would be interested in remixing his track I Care, about two and a half minutes later, Mogi asked me if I knew anyone who needed a remix done because he was bored. Less than an hour later, Mogi sent me this remix, which he created while at the local bar. In true fashion this past Thursday, Mogi sent me a message about an upcoming show, expressing interest in playing with Ben and Fall On Your Sword sometime. I asked him, what he was up to this weekend, and sure enough in a matter of hours, he was on his way to NYC from Ann Arbor to join the show’s lineup, which also included Rioux.
Fall On Your Sword – Shatner of the Mount (video)
Fall On Your Sword was the headlining act for the early Saturday show, which ran from 6:30 til 10, giving us just enough time to skip over to Manhattan to see Shigeto. At first, I thought these guys just made hilarious video mashups akin to , but man oh man are these guys fun to watch live. The synth groove in this tune is unavoidably catchy, and slightly addictive. I think these guys will continue to grow because they bring the fun and energy from their videos to their live performances, I also think we will be seeing another show in the future with Mogi, CHARLIE! and FOYS.
Zoot Woman – Jessie

Here’s a group I likely wouldn’t have come across had it not been for Hey Kids! and Akutou’s awesome compilations. If I were going to DJ in between sets for the show I just described, I’d probably play tunes like these last two picks. Looks like has caught on with an authentic sound that has survived the electroclash wave’s long-passed recede. My friends were asking if this was made in 1982 or 2009 when I played it yesterday morning. I’ll have to admit it sounds a little like Joe Jackson or Go West.
Tommy Sparks – Miracle (GRUM Remix)

I am a fan of remixes, so I definitely gravitated toward this track when I came across it. Kind of repetitive, but the synth is pretty nice. This remix is pretty adventurous and upbeat, would probably make a good picker-upper for the dance floor to get people excited. Not much else to it, tracks like these are meant for a smile, sometimes for a laugh, but always for a good time.
