Today, it is the birthday of a figure who is held in high regard around these parts. His name is James Yancey, aka Jay Dee aka J Dilla. Going on about how I think he’s the greatest hip hop producer of all time is not the goal today. Instead, I’ve selected a few choice cuts of his material, so hopefully you can take a moment out of your day (especially if your days have been as hectic as mine recently) to step back and absorb the impeccable vibes Dilla blessed listeners with. If you didn’t already know, however, Dilla’s time on this earth was fleeting, and he passed away in 2006. Regardless, as argued in an earlier post, what makes Dilla’s contribution so important to me at least, is the crossover his talents achieved posthumously, reaching into the electronic and indie scenes, and influencing (often quite heavily) so many sounds with a unique thread that makes you smile whenever you hear it.

RIP J Dilla – Gone, but not really.
