ThruYOU: Kutiman mixes YouTube
So in honor of life’s recent turn of tides, I am diversifying my skillset. Among other things, I am (finally) working on my first music video project in After Effects. While it’s not yet ready, you can find a WIP on Vimeo somewhere if you look hard enough. We saw an interesting music video in my last post from Vimeo, a site which I love for the sheer quality of their video player, allowing HD movies to have a home online. So in the future, look for me to add that to my network. And of course I’ll post it here when the time comes.
While I was doing this work on my own project, my friend Dave sent me a link to ThruYOU, it’s a website that contains an “album” of music video mashups. But this goes beyond the realm of nastiness, he’s creating the music from YouTube clips of people playing instruments. You simply have to see it to believe it, he even links up all of his sources. I can’t find an embed code for it tho. It looks like the website is cleverly remixed from the real YouTube itself, but living in it’s own flash realm.
The music, by Kutiman, an Israeli funk/afro-beat musician, is wonderful in it’s own right, reminiscent of the Herbaliser or maybe lighter DJ Shadow. It’s the result of similar production techniques– composing songs entirely out of samples, but the kicker here is that Kutiman did it using videos he found around YouTube…here’s to YouTube becoming the next record store.
Do yourself a favor and check this stuff out!
