Can, Shigeto, Audion, Ponytail
My friend Corey is a well-versed music fan, a great person to discover new music through, this morning he played me some Can. Considered one of the most important and influential groups in krautrock, they formed in 1968. What a crazy story too, their first lead singer was American sculptor Malcom Mooney, who had to return to the US from their recording studio built into a crazy German castle, on recommendations from a psychiatrist. They later picked up Japanese singer Kenji “Damo” Suzuki, whom they found busking outside a cafe in Munich. Suzuki is the singer for this track, which is what caught my ear this morning. It’s off their album Tago Mago, which has a cool story to it’s creation as well. The track I’m posting is an exerpt of their song Halleluhwah, the full version of which clocks in at over 18 minutes. Make sure you listen to this song the whole way through, I love how they end this one.
This Shigeto remix is a free download from Moodgadget (click the song title above the player), for you IDM fans out there. I had to email Shigeto himself to tell him how much I enjoy this track. It’s from the Worst Friends Pillows of Wind EP which will be out later this month. Pillows of Wind is an awesome EP, with remixes so eclectic, yet strong in their own right. Shigeto’s remix of their track AG incorporates all the elements of IDM we’ve grown familiar with and come to love, this song has a lot to like if you enjoy that type of music.
Audion just launched audion.me, where you can download a free mp3 of his new track I Am The Car when you sign up with your email address. Apparently, he plans to release more material there, then release then as 12″s, and then as an album through Spectral Sound. I gotta say how much I like Audion’s artwork, which is done by Will Calcutt, simply because I didn’t really have any thoughts on it at first, but the ongoing theme captured in these patterns grew on me.
I came across this video over at Pitchfork.tv randomly just now, it’s by Ponytail, a “spaz-rock” 4-piece. The song is called Late For School, they filmed themselves playing it in a laundromat somewhere in Queens. I always fantacize about setting up my guitar with a band in the middle of a busy public place and just rocking out and going nuts. This song has some really cool parts to it, although I’m not a fan of the idiotic sheep noises, the lo-fi guitar tricks and the last part of the song (“Oh no, I’m late for school!”) are great, making this video well worth a watch, all the way through even if you get turned off at some point. Is this like, what Can would do if they started today in NYC instead of Germany in ’68? The video player gets kinda messed up in this template, so you can check it here if that annoys you so.
