Mingus Rude - Burn

Apologies for the relative lack of activity around here since last week when I posted the 5ifth Element mix, but I hope you got a chance to check it out, along with my Mount Vision ambient mix posted a couple weeks ago.  I spent the weekend in DC with a bunch of old college buddies and then ended up allowing myself to be kidnapped and brought back to Pittsburgh, where I am currently writing this from.  The decisions to make these trips were unbelievably off the cusp, last minute decisions, which in my opinion make them that much more exciting.  At any rate, here are some tunes that I have been bumping during my travels.

First up is actually not a brand new tune, it’s from , a Georgia-based indie rock outfit whose music I’ve posted here before, along with a track from lead singer Bradford Cox’s shoegazey side-project, .  When I listen to Nothing Ever Happened, I hear the perfect soundtrack to being on the road, and that happens to be exactly how I really started to enjoy this song– twilight on the highway, a burgundy horizon and yellow and red headlights speeding by.  My favorite part is at around 2:25, with a lightly distorted solo reminscent of Sonic Youth.  This track appeared on a free iTunes Lollapalooza compilation recently, which you can get access to by going here (hurry if you want these tunes, because the offer expires at the end of the month).

Mingus Rude – Burn (Frank Omura’s 734 Remix)

Mingus Rude lit up Hype Machine’s top 3 most blogged about and later, the top 3 most tweeted charts two weeks ago with his edit of Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams.  Well next month will see the release of his first single on Moodgadget: Burn.  The single is so hot, seems to release heat lines, a pairing of the original mix with 4 smoldering remixes from D’Marc Cantu (of 2AM/FM), Mogi Grumbles, Punisher, and Frank Omura.  Omura’s remix of this track has been lauded by many, including myself, as the single’s best track…I personally see that as a tough call to make, but when the track shifts gears in a late drop about 5 minutes in, I spontaneously combust…what a sick drop!

Tron Legacy Theme (Mogi Grumbles Remix)

As mentioned just earlier, Mogi Grumbles has been working extraordinarily hard on a slough of remixes, live shows and sets, all in anticipation of his next album.  Well, today I found in my inbox, a brand new remix of his of the Tron Legacy Theme.  Tron fans should really get a kick out of this track, which pairs Mogi’s signature bass and synths with the perfect amount of guilty nerd pleasure nostalgia.  Daft Punk fans will definitely dig this, as a producer who wears influences on his sleeve, Mogi might not really mind the comparisons, but a closer look and listen proves that he is making his own music and fitting that into Moodgadget’s puzzle-like catalog of electronic diversity, not simply making french house, electro or nu disco.  Am I the only one who thinks that Disney should remake Tron for the sole purpose of bringing Mogi in to do the soundtrack?
