Crooks Like Us (via A Time To Get)

Got some two step tunes for you today, a little bit of dubstep, a little bit infused with other genres like indie/shoegaze and hip-hop/idm.  Also decided to add just one of some amazing mugshots circa 1900’s Australia, from a book by Peter Boyle called Crooks Like Us (via A Time To Get).  I have gone through mounds of two step tracks, many on my computer, that just bore me with not enough bass, and not enough personality in the beats.  When we experience proper dubstep, it’s done live, from a set of tables with a massive sub right next to our head.  As such, only the best tunes will suffice, and like any musical genre (and in life in general, I suppose), it tends to get packed full of fluff you won’t like, which must be navigated through to find the choicest cuts.  Being partial to the chilled out side of any type of music, these first two dubstep tracks are USDA Prime Cuts that will send chills down your spine.  Turn your sub up and jump in!

is a young up-and-comer from the UK, is gaining clout quickly with tracks like Rain.  Vivid and deep, the cavernous synth pads hum like generators deep beneath your city, and when the bass kicks in it causes everything to rumble and vibrate.  It blows me away to hear bass like this, either I don’t spend enough time in the day looking for tracks like this or they are as rare as I think they are.

Slightly more upbeat, yet equally low in temperature, this track was great for cooling off the summer, but might be a little too cool for these breezy early autumn nights.  This track is good for driving at night, the organ gives it a slight action movie feel, and I really love the way these highs breeze on top of the composition.  Solid tune.  In fact, if you’re liking, , who posts here on Blog.H34 as Laotze just released an ISO50-exclusive dubstep essentials mix, it rains hot fire from the sky!

Here’s a surprising remix from Jesu, whom I’ve been into since I first heard Warm & Scratchy.  I say it’s surprising as a remix because of the two step structure, that seems to fuse dubstep with ‘s airy shoegaze waves and ‘ ever-recognizable vocals.  The result seems to be a match made in heaven, with the loud speaker-exploding shoegaze tones assuming the identity of the bass we usually hear.  I think this is pretty cool, and comes off well-executed.

Finally, I just started playing me some again, his album Color Strip from 2006 is amazing.  One track that blew me away, especially with the pairing of audio to video, was LBLB Detroit.  The bass of this song is so nicely sustained, bumping along with a disjointed re-organization of R&B highs, like a broken mirror fashioned into a throwing star.  This track exudes luxury, style, desire, and looking at this track as an artistic expression gives it a lot of appeal.  To completely destroy any misconceptions of the picture this tune is intended to paint, this sexy video (which may or may not be NSFW, use your disgretion) puts it all out there for you to see.
